I have learned that what we see in our past and visualize in our future determines how we view ourselves today . . . in that third dimension we call "the present." What about the "now" scares you? Listen to the words of the psalmist:
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4 (ESV)
No doubt many of you are going through the valley of the shadow right now — maybe the valley of the shadow of death. It may be the valley of the shadow of debt or even doubt. It may be the valley of the shadow of conflict or confusion. Perhaps, the valley of the shadow of depression or defeat. It may be the valley of the shadow of discouragement or brokenness. What valley are you in that has brought hurt to your life?
I have learned that shadows are scary. Remember how you used to be afraid of shadows when you were lying in bed as a kid? Man, I do! I’ve learned a few things about shadows, though, since then.
First, shadows can’t hurt you. It's just a shadow and no more.
Second, shadows are always bigger than the source. The reflection is always scary!
But — here’s the good news — wherever or whenever, there’s a shadow, there has to be a light. You can’t have a shadow without light. So the key when you’re going through the valley of the shadow is to turn your back on the shadow and look at the light. Because as long as you keep your eyes on the light — Jesus, the light of the world — the shadow won’t scare you. You see - Jesus is the answer.
So, forget yesterday's shadow's and don't be concerned about tomorrow's shadow, because Jesus is your comfort wherever your mind may drift. Just live in the "NOW" and let Jesus be your light!
