“Christmas – God came Near”
“She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manager.” Luke 2:7
This morning I have just read the Christmas Story for the 29th time this month in preparation for Advent – God’s own inspired account of His Son’s coming to this planet in embryonic form, growing in Mary’s womb, then being born in the little town of Bethlehem.
As I tried to place myself there at the time of His birth, hearing those first-time-ever infant cries from Deity’s throat, I got a lump in mine. Imagine! Just imagine what it would be like to hold Him, kiss Him, feel His warm body, and look into those clear, beautiful eyes….I remember my first born – what an experience.
Then I thought, Wow! – God was once a baby – just like me. For the first and only time in human history, the Lord, the Creator, was an infant – a baby in the arms of His mother. What a passionate and tender scene…Just like me, His mother taught Him, trained Him, and led Him in the way of the Father….Just like me, He had a mother who cared about Him, clothed Him, fed Him and provided for His every need…Just like me, and Jesus was a child dependent upon a mother’s love and care.
When God came near, He came as a baby – just like me. For the first time I think I understand those words in the Gospel of John:
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (John 1:14)
Amazing! God was one of us, so we could be ONE with Him. Christmas is about being part of the Family of God. Are you?
Place yourself in the Christmas story this year as you read the account. Who are you and what is God saying to you?
Have a very Merry Christmas.
