Christmas and Children
This Sunday we will have our Children’s Christmas program. It’s titled “The Christmas Carol...A Special Report.” As I thought about the title of the program – I thought to myself, The Special Report should say, “it is the best Christmas gift ever.” In fact, so great is this gift, that I’m not sure we can sufficiently describe it in human words. Listen to the thoughts of the Apostle Paul:
“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.”(2 Cor.9:15)
Now, link that verse with the words of Matthew, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matt.1:21)
Christmas is a joyous time that brings more delight to our hearts than the Children’s Christmas program at church. God has literally given us the “best” Christmas present ever… The indescribable gift - of His personal love.
Terry Toler shared a great story that really stirred my heart. He said, “I love the story of the first graders who decided to produce their very own Christmas program.
All the major characters were there - Joseph, the shepherds, the angels, and the wise men from afar . . . but where was Mary?
Shortly after the production began, there was heard, from behind some bales of straw, moaning and groaning - Mary was in labor!
A doctor with a white coat and black bag was then ushered on the stage and disappeared with Joseph behind the bales of straw. After a few minutes, the doctor emerged from behind the bales of straw with a big smile on his face and holding a baby in his arms. Then in a loud voice he announced to the audience:
"It's a God! It's a God!"
He is Emmanuel - and He is God with us! No matter where you live in the world or what your Christmas traditions may be…The gift of God is God in the flesh! What a gift! What more can we say than –“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift”?
But, there is something we can say and do. The “best gift” we can ever give to someone else is to tell them the story of your own salvation. Share the gift with someone this year! Better yet, how about everyday!
